Abstract

"The purpose of this study was to compare the relative efficacy of two errorless learning procedures, one with and one without a quick transfer trial, on the rate of acquisition (i.e., trials to mastery, total duration to mastery) in two adults with an autism spectrum disorder. A multiple baseline and an embedded adapted alternating baseline were used. Eight unknown identification, sequencing, or tacting tasks were included, and each task was associated with one of the two procedures. The quick transfer procedure included a 2-s trial that immediately followed a prompted trial whereas the other comparison condition did not include this trial. The quick transfer procedure resulted in fewer trials to mastery in two of five comparisons for one participant and in one of three comparisons for the other participant. However, the quick transfer procedure was not effective in increasing skill acquisition in two of the three comparisons. For the second participant, the quick transfer procedure resulted in criterion performance in all three comparisons. However, the quick transfer procedure resulted in criterion performance in fewer trials for only three out of eight comparisons. These findings suggest that the quick transfer trial procedure can promote skill acquisition and may be more efficient with some tasks but not all."
