Abstract

"Previous research has demonstrated the efficacy of self-instruction interventions for training staff to implement behavior analytic procedures. However, there is limited research on the utility of self-instruction training for teaching chaining procedures and it is unclear which component of the training packages were necessary for staff to reach mastery. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate a self-instruction training package for backward chaining. In addition, the generality of the teaching procedure was evaluated by assessing trainee performance in implementing the same backward chaining procedure with an actual student. First, an instructions only component was conducted that included written instructions, diagrams, and pictures. If the instructions alone training condition was insufficient in producing criterion performance, then a video modeling component was added. For both trainees, a training package consisting of written instructions and video modeling was necessary for the trainees to reach mastery. For the participant who completed the generality assessment, their performance maintained at mastery levels."
