Abstract

"A number of studies have illustrated how access to stereotypy or other automatically-maintained behavior can be used as a reinforcer for other responses; however, few studies have incorporated Functional Communication Training (FCT) as part of that treatment approach. In the current study, a treatment and fading package that included FCT plus blocking was used to reduce automatically maintained behaviors that interfered with work and leisure training for four individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Next, access to reinforcement was thinned and treatment was expanded by introducing tolerance training, response-chaining, and proximity fading. Following treatment, participants requested access to automatically maintained behavior and completed clinically significant amounts of work to produce access to time to engage in the targeted behavior."
